Oneonta State

Oneonta State named seniors Shannon Weir and Michael Hamilton its athletes of the week Monday.

Milford graduate Weir helped the women's basketball team to a 1-1 record at the Austin College Thanksgiving Classic this past weekend in Sherman, Texas. She had 19 points and nine rebounds in a 65-53 victory over Southwestern University on Friday, then contributed a team-high 11 points in a 55-39 loss to Austin on Saturday.

Weir leads O-State (4-1) with 14.8 points a game. Oneonta hosts Cortland in "The Battle of the Red Dragons" at 6 p.m. today at Alumni Field House. The game will feature two Daily Star Players of the Year in Weir (2003) and Cortland's Jessica Laing, who led South Kortright to the Class D state title in 2006.

Wrestler Hamilton finished third in the 174-pound weight class during the Oneonta State Invitational on Nov. 22.

Hamilton opened with a 13-5 victory over Andrew Brochu of Johns Hopkins, then beat Marc Candito of The College of New Jersey, 6-0.

Hamilton (9-2) fell into the losers' bracket with a 5-1 setback against Cortland's Mike Ciaburri, but he beat Morrisville's Chad McCray, 6-4, and RIT's Nick Ryan, 4-2, to place third.

The Red Dragons, who finished third as a team, compete in the Petrofes Tournament on Dec. 5 at Messiah.

SUNY Cobleskill

SUNY Cobleskill named sophomore women's basketball point guard Nichole Garzon its athlete of the week.

Garzon had 14 points, three assists and five steals Sunday, when the Fighting Tigers (1-4) earned their first victory as an NCAA Division III program with a 63-39 rout of host Cazenovia.

Cobleskill visits Sage College at 6 p.m. Thursday.
