Delhi graduate makes mark for Iona football

Junior defensive back Taylor Sohns (Delhi) ranked second on Iona's football team in tackles this fall.

Sohns made 70 tackles _ 37 solo _ for the Gaels, who finished 3-6.

Five of Sohn's tackles went for losses and he had one sack. He also had six pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and caught one pass for 17 yards.

Iona is an NCAA Sub-division team (formerly known as Division I-AA).

Steve Axtell

Sidney graduate Axtell earned third-team all-SUNY Athletic Conference honors as a goalie for Cortland State's soccer team.

Axtell, a senior, had a 1.00 goals against average and three shutouts.

The Red Dragons (11-7-1) were eliminated from the NCAA Division III tournament with a 1-0 second-round loss to Hobart on Sunday.

Tony Dilello

American International College senior Tony Dilello (Oneonta High) earned second-team honors on the all-Northeast-10 Conference team as a guard.

The Yellow Jackets (9-2) qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time, losing a first-round game to visiting Seton Hill, 14-7, Saturday.

Dilello, a 6-foot-3, 325-pounder, helped an offense that rushed for 1,621 yards and threw for 2,389.

Christina Olsen

Senior midfielder Olsen (Unatego) appeared in 10 games and started three for the University of Buffalo's Division I women's soccer team.

The Bulls finished the season 4-10-4.

Marcel Sanchez

Oneonta High graduate Sanchez gained 174 yards on 19 carries for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's football team.

Sanchez, a freshman, also scored two touchdowns in helping MIT to a 5-5 record.

Kayla Stone

Downsville graduate Stone helped Broome Community College's women's soccer to an NJCAA Division III championship.

Stone played defense for the 20-1-1 Hornets.

Brittany Westcott, Erin Clinton

and Morgan Dutcher

Sophomore goalie Westcott (Davenport), senior forward Clinton (Bainbridge-Guilford) and freshman defender Dutcher (Milford) helped Cazenovia's soccer team to a 6-9-2 season.

Westcott had a 2.16 goals against average in 16 starts, making 122 saves. She also had one assist.

Clinton made 16 starts and took 21 shots but failed to score. Dutcher started 12 games and helped Cazenovia to two shutouts.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP ... Not only will Cooperstown take a 15-3 record into the Section Three Class C-2 tournament next week, the Redskins also are getting healthier. The Redskins' girls basketball team defeated visiting Waterville, 63-29, and earned the co-championship in Division III of the Center State Conference on Friday. Cooperstown and Hamilton each finished with 9-1 league records.

    YOUTH BASKETBALL _ 2012 ELKS HOOP SHOOT ... Tanner Russin of Oneonta is looking to hit Glens Falls with his best shot. Center Street Elementary third-grader Tanner made it three in a row Feb. 4, when he won the 8-9 boys age-group title during the 2012 Elks Hoop Shoot State Semifinals at Herkimer County Community College.
