Weir, O-State defeat Hawks

Host Oneonta State held West Street rival Hartwick College to 19 percent shooting in the second half and made up a six-point halftime deficit en route to a 58-43 non-league women's basketball victory Tuesday.

Milford graduate Shannon Weir scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Red Dragons in their opener.

O-State outscored the Hawks, 33-12, in the second half and forced 26 turnovers.

The Red Dragons took the lead for good when Rebecca Bucci hit a three-pointer with 8 minutes, 4 seconds remaining to give the O-State a 39-37 lead.

Weir, The Daily Star's Player of the Year in 2003, went 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The senior also had five rebounds, three assists, three steals and no turnovers. Teammate Casey Snyder contributed nine points and four rebounds.

Hartwick (0-2) received nine points from Heather Pruchansky, who hit three of her four three-point attempts. Lauren Ploof had five and points and six assists for Hartwick, which shot 5-for-26 from the field in the second half after making 11 of its 26 shots in the first half.

The Red Dragons will play Simmons College at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Hunter College Tournament.

Hartwick will play Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 8 p.m. Friday at Chicopee, Mass. Cooperstown graduate Jen Wehner, The Daily Star's Player of the Year last season, plays for MCLA, but is recovering from a knee injury and isn't expected to play until December.

Shataya McComb scored a game-high 25 points, but SUNY Delhi lost a non-conference game on the road.

Shanay Bradley contributed nine points and 18 rebounds for the Broncos, who received 10 points from Lani Smith.

Alyssa Polosky paced Broome with 20 points, including two three-point field goals. Nicole Conway (Bainbridge-Guilford) scored two points for the Hornets.

Delhi (4-4) visits Fulton-Montgomery at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Mark Blasek had 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting to lead visiting Hartwick to a season-opening victory in front of 2,611 fans at Dewar Arena.

The Hawks, who led, 36-27, at halftime, received 13 points and seven rebounds from Jan Coccozziello. A.J. Beaulieu contributed 10 points for Hartwick (1-0), which plays York in the opening round of the New Paltz Tip-Off Classic at 1 p.m. Friday.

Brian Beckford had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Dragons (1-1), who shot 1-for-13 from three-point range. Michael Grimes contributed 13 points and Maurice Lane had nine.

O-State plays the host school at the Gordon College Tip-Off Tournament at 8 p.m. Friday.

Corey Lewis contributed five points for Cobleskill, which visits Fredonia at 7 p.m. Saturday.
