Broncos women's coach Wood, men's standout highlight cross country meet

SUNY Delhi women's cross country coach Justin Wood earned the best local finish among 120 men's entrants in the Airfield Invitational at Oneonta's Fortin Park on Friday. Wood, a Walton native and SUNY Delhi graduate, finished third overall in 18 minutes, 50 seconds on the 6-kilometer course as a representative of the Bronco Track Club.

Chris Mason placed fifth in 19:01 for Delhi's men, who also received an 11th-place finish from Chris Burke (19:34). Delhi finished sixth among nine teams with 125 points.

Plattsburgh and Cortland tied for the team title with 45 points apiece. Oneonta State, paced by Marty Nicholson (14th, 19:38) finished third (88 points). Justin Pedersen (69th, 21:37) led last-place Hartwick (266).

Peter Kosgei of fourth-place Hamilton (97) won in 18:26.

Jenny Schaffhouser won the women's 4,500-meter race in 16:52 for Plattsburgh, which scored 63 points to finish second to Hamilton (56). A total of 95 women competed.

Amberlyn Mattice earned the highest local finish, placing ninth for O-State in 17:44. Celia Alterio finished 12th (17:51) for the Red Dragons, who scored 127 points to place fifth in the team standings.

Kim McKay (33rd, 18:34) paced seventh-place Delhi (218). Gilbertsville-Mount Upton graduate Gabby Dello, a former SUNY Delhi runner, led Hartwick with a 46th-place finish (19:05). The Hawks finished eighth (223) out of nine women's teams.

The Red Dragons visit St. Lawrence University on Sept. 27 for the Hoffmann Invitational. St. Lawrence will host the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championship on Nov. 15.

Jen Lin and Anne Neely earned Hartwick's point against Empire 8 Conference visitor Rochester Institute of Technology (4-2, 4-1) with an 8-1 victory at second doubles.

Hartwick's Kim Post and Carly Jesset each fell in three-set matches, at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

The Hawks (1-5, 1-2) host Elmira for an E8 match at 1 p.m. Saturday and follow with a non-leaguer against Keuka College at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Oneonta State swept Plattsburgh before getting swept by New Paltz on the first day of SUNY Athletic Conference Round-Robin Tournament at Potsdam.

The Red Dragons defeated Plattsburgh, 25-12, 25-23, 25-22. They fell, 25-13, 25-19, 25-13, to New Paltz.

O-State plays Cortland at 10 a.m. and Potsdam at noon Saturday.
