Hartwick men win, finish 2nd in Cup

Senior John Paul Boyle scored twice Sunday to lead Hartwick College to its first men's soccer win of the season, a 3-1 defeat of UNC Wilmington in the second round of the Mayor's Cup at Elmore Field.

Sam Wright also scored for Hartwick (1-2-1), which jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 22 minutes. The Hawks went 1-0-1 as the hosts of the Mayor's Cup but finished second behind Syracuse, which won both of its games.

Boyle opened the scoring 7 minutes, 20 seconds into the game, beating goalie Brock Duckworth to the left side after receiving a low cross to the middle from the left side from Austin McCann.

Wright made it 2-0 on a corner kick 11:04 later. Boyle then capped the Hartwick scoring 21:54 in, converting from 12 yards on a long throw-in from Owen Botting that was flicked ahead by Dan Summers at the corner of the 18-yard box.

Matt Brown headed in a pass from Jeffrey Shapiro in the 75th minute to end winning goalie Jeremy Vuolo's shutout bid. Vuolo, who helped the Hawks to a 0-0 tie against Florida Gulf Coast in Friday's opening round, made two saves.
