Harryman's slam lifts O-Tigers

Eric Harryman hit a grand slam and Brandon Douglas had four hits to lead the Oneonta Tigers to a 10-4 New York-Penn League victory at Vermont on Friday.

Harryman's fourth home run of the season _ a drive to left off Jose Pinales in the fifth inning _ gave Oneonta an 8-3 lead. It came after Pinales walked Carlos Ramirez, Bryan Pounds and Joe Bowen with one out.

Vermont pitchers finished with eight walks and the Lake Monsters committed four errors.

It marked third victory in four games for the O-Tigers (32-41), who close the season Saturday at Vermont. Oneonta needs a victory Saturday to avoid its worst season since the franchise became affiliated with the Detroit Tigers in 1999. Even if the Tigers win Saturday, the best they can do is equal the 2004 O-Tigers' mark of 33-41, which is the franchise's worst record since 1999.

Oneonta can pass Vermont (33-41) for second place in the Stedler Division with a victory Saturday. Lowell (40-33) has clinched the division title.

Starter Matt Hoffman (3-5) earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits over five innings.

He struck out five and walked one. Mark Brackman allowed one run over the next 1 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Anthony Shawler closed it out by throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Vermont had 13 hits but stranded 13 runners.

Douglas' RBI single in the second inning gave Oneonta the lead for good at 3-2. Douglas contributed another RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 4-2.

Luis Arlet and Brent Wyatt hit RBI singles in the ninth inning to cap the scoring for Oneonta.

Douglas raised his team-leading batting average to .314 after going 4-for-6. The only other Oneonta player hitting over .300 is Wyatt (.304), who scored twice Friday.

Harryman scored three times and Bowen had two runs.
