Hartwick plays to scoreless tie in Cup

Hartwick College played Florida Gulf Coast University to a scoreless Division I men's soccer tie in double-overtime Friday during the opening round of the Mayor's Cup Tournament in front of 2,146 fans at Elmore Field.

Jeremy Vuolo made four saves for the Hawks (0-2-1), who were outshot, 10-9. Matt O'Shaughnessy and Scott Harrison each had two shots on goal against Vuolo, who stopped all four. Austin McCann and Phil Cartwright had the only shots on goal against FCU keeper Adam Glick.

The Hawks will meet UNC Wilmington at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the second round, which will begin with Syracuse and FGC at 11 a.m.

Kyle Hall converted an assist from Geoff Lytle in the 69th minute during Friday's Mayor's Cup opener, leading the Orange to a 1-0 victory.

Susquehanna 1, O-State 0

Susquehanna sophomore Brandon Eisenhart tracked down a loose ball at the top of the penalty box and beat a diving Max Siegelman in the 51st minute to lift the Crusaders to a victory in the opening game of the Division III Mayor's Cup at Red Dragon Field.

Susquehanna (2-0) advanced to the championship game against Allegheny at 4 p.m. Saturday back at Red Dragon Field. Allegheny beat Rowan, 2-1, in overtime in the other first-round game.

O-State (2-1) will meet Rowan at 1 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game.

Sophomore Gary Laronde hit the left post in the 15th minute for the Red Dragons, who got a goal-line clear from junior Matt Lindemann in the 33rd minute to preserve the scoreless tie.

Susquehanna outshot Oneonta, 16-9, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Winning goalie B.J. Merriam made three saves. Siegelman finished with 10 saves.

Bomber Invitational

Oneonta State went 1-1 on the first day of the Bomber Invitational at Ithaca College, falling to the tournament host, 3-0, before earning a 3-2 win over Hamilton.

Caitlin Ross had 17 kills and eight digs in the Red Dragons' 25-10, 24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13 victory over Hamilton. Jess Ptasnick contributed 26 assists and 15 digs, and Brianna Slutsky finished with 30 digs.

"We're a pretty young team out there, but we're working well together," O-State coach Colleen Cashman said. "Our offense is much stronger this year than last year, but it's the belief, too, that we can win these against these teams that will be key."

Ross paced O-State in the 25-8, 25-23, 26-24 loss to Ithaca with eight kills and 12 digs.

The Red Dragons (3-3) will play in the fifth/seventh-place match of the 12-team tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The championship match is slated for 4 p.m.

SUNY Cobleskill dropped its first two matches in the Springfield College Invitational.

The Fighting Tigers (0-2) lost to the host school, 25-15, 25-10, 25-18 before falling to Rhode Island College, 25-17, 25-23, 25-11.

Cobleskill plays Emerson College and Trinity College on Saturday.

Emily Shannon, Katie Wlodarczyk, Liz Flamman and Carly Fried earned singles victories as Oneonta State (2-0, 2-0) remained undefeated with a SUNY Athletic Conference victory at home.

The Red Dragons, who swept doubles play, host Cortland at 11 a.m. Saturday.
