O-State men's soccer wins first two games

Sophomore defender Jordan Flores scored twice Monday for Oneonta State, including the winner in the second overtime, as the Red Dragons beat non-conference host Castleton State, 2-1.

Jerry DeChance opened the scoring 13 minutes in for Castleton (0-2), but Flores tied it in the 83rd minute with an unassisted goal. He ended the game in the 105th minute, converting a free-kick pass from Yfran Garcia for the final margin.

Goalie Max Siegelman earned his second straight victory in relief of Jonathan Korn, who is nursing an injury to his left shoulder, O-State coach Iain Byrne said.

O-State (2-0) hosts Susquehanna at 1 p.m. Friday in the first game of the Mayor's Cup Tournament at Red Dragon Field. Allegany and Rowan follow at 4 p.m. The two-day tournament ends Saturday with a 1 p.m. consolation followed by a 4 p.m. championship.

Sophomore Larry Pestana scored in the 69th minute Saturday as O-State opened its 2008 schedule with a 1-0 defeat of visiting SUNY Farmingdale. Pestana's goal to the left side of the net came from inside the box off a pass from classmate Gary Laronde.

Siegelman made one save for the shutout.

Pestana shared athlete of the week honors from O-State with field hockey player Cassandra O'Mara.

Lindsey Brechbiel dribbled through the Roanoke College defense and scored with 35 minutes left Saturday as Oneonta State earned its first victory of the season with a consolation win at the Roanoke Invitational in Salem, Va.

Winning goalie Kayla Murphy made six saves for the Red Dragons (1-1), who opened the tournament and their season with a 1-0 loss to Johns Hopkins on Friday. Lindsay Kooiman finished with eight saves for the Maroons (0-2), who went scoreless in the tournament.

O-State, which outshot the Maroons, 13-9, plays Wilmington (Ohio) in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup Tournament at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Dragon Field.

Somer Shuffield, a senior, had a goal and an assist for host Oneonta State (2-0) in a non-conference match Sunday at All-College Field.

Cassie O'Mara opened the scoring off a Shuffield assist 2:41 in. Shuffield followed with a goal in the 24th minute for a 2-0 lead, and Andrea VanDyke capped it with a goal in the 43rd minute.

Oneonta goalie Erika Dombkowski made nine saves in the shutout, which she shared with sophomore backup Leslie Dauphinais (zero saves in three minutes).

Oneonta hosts Juniata at 3 p.m. Saturday.

First-year coach Kelly Kingsbury earned her first victory Saturday, when the host Red Dragons came from behind to win their season opener.

Sophomore Alysia Basher converted a pass from Kathryn Kubaryk on a 2-on-1 fastbreak in the first sudden-victory overtime period for the win. Classmate Ainsley Stoll forced the extra period when she scored off a penalty corner with 1:25 remaining in regulation.

Katy Eby opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute for Alvernia, but Cassie O'Mara tied it with her first collegiate goal. O'Mara scored off an assist from Somer Shuffield before Alvernia took a 2-1 advantage in the opening minute of the second half on an unassisted goal by Samantha Landis.

Junior goalie Erika Dombkowski made eight saves for Oneonta.

Freshman Jennifer Kraham earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Plattsburgh's Valerie Papi as Oneonta State opened its 2008 season with a SUNY Athletic Conference victory on the road.

Kraham teamed with classmate Carly Fried for an 8-4 victory at second doubles. Fried contributed a 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles as well. O-State hosts Oswego at 4 p.m. Friday.

Red Dragon Invitational

Oneonta State finished 2-2 in the Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational after closing with a 3-0 sweep of Hartwick in Saturday's final round in the Gold Division.

O-State won, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18. Freshman Jessica Zerega had a team-high 23 digs and three aces. Jessica Ptasnick and Kelsey Klopfer contributed 18 and 13 assists, respectively, for the Red Dragons, who received eight digs and six kills from all-tournament selection Caitlin Ross. She amassed 42 digs and 33 kills over four invitational matches.

Ross had 10 kills and 14 digs in Saturday's opener, a 25-20, 25-6, 17-25, 25-15 loss to Scranton. Brianna Slutsky contributed 12 digs, and Ptasnick and Klopfer had 10 assists apiece.

The Red Dragons visit Ithaca on Friday to compete in the Bomber Invitational.
