Bowling league to meet Friday

The Fraternal Bowling League will hold its organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Friday at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. The Friday night men's handicap league is open to the public. New teams (at least four bowlers) may join as well as new individuals, who will be placed on existing teams.

League bowling starts Sept 5. For more information, call secretary Jerry Blechman at 607-433-1770 or e-mail him at blechmjb@oneonta.edu.

Killebrew to appear at Baseball Hall

National Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew will participate in a Voices of the Game event at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Cooperstown museum's Grandstand Theater.

Elected to the Hall in 1984, Killebrew is a 13-time All-Star and the 1969 American League Most Valuable Player. Killebrew led the AL in home runs six times during his 22-year major league career with the Senators, Twins and Royals, finishing with 573 home runs.

Tickets are required and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than age 12. Members may reserve tickets immediately. Remaining tickets, if any, will be available to non-members Aug. 25 by calling the Membership Department at 607-547-0397.

Seniors Open to run Sept. 2-5

The 26th annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open begins Sept. 2 with its Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the par-72 Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.

National Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew will serve as host of the Pro-Am, which features 32 teams (four amateurs and one pro apiece) in a two-man, best-ball event that opens with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m.

The Seniors Open follows from Sept. 3-5. A field of 138 will compete for a first-place prize of $10,000. The non-PGA event boasts a purse of $100,000. Cooperstown native Scott Spence won last year's title with a 10-under-par 206.

Proceeds from the Seniors Open will benefit Pathfinder Village in Edmeston and the Baseball Hall.

Bowlers to meet tonight

The Chen Del O United States Bowling Congress Association will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. today at the River Bend Golf Club on Route 8, between New Berlin and South New Berlin.

The association will appoint committees; discuss rules, dates and locations for its tournaments; elect officers; and distribute league start-up packets to attending secretaries during today's meeting. All bowlers are encouraged to attend. For more information, call Susan Gregory at 607-561-5523.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP ... Not only will Cooperstown take a 15-3 record into the Section Three Class C-2 tournament next week, the Redskins also are getting healthier. The Redskins' girls basketball team defeated visiting Waterville, 63-29, and earned the co-championship in Division III of the Center State Conference on Friday. Cooperstown and Hamilton each finished with 9-1 league records.
