Teen shoots record 66 at juniors

It required 30 strokes for 13-year-old Gavin Hall to complete the back nine at Oneonta Country Club on Tuesday in the first round of the New York State Junior Amateur Championships.

Hall of Rochester made seven birdies over his final nine holes en route to a tournament record 6-under 66 and a four-shot lead over Pierce Terrance in the boys division (ages 11-14), heading into today's final round at OCC.

Hall plays out of the Country Club of Mendon. Terrance's home course is Brighton Park.

According to a story posted on the New York State Golf Association's website (nysga.org), Hall's score is the lowest in boys division history. The website did not report what was the previous low round in the 52-year-old tournament.

Defending boys champion Joe Drummond shot a 75.

In the junior boys division (ages 15-17), 17-year-old Joe Vogl shot a 1-under 71 to take a three-shot lead over Tim DiStefano (Schuyler Meadows), Jeff Baldetti (Skaneateles CC), Eric Edmunds (Dutch Hollow) and Thaddeus Wier III (Springville CC).

On the girls side, Suzie Lee, 16, of Bethpage State Park highlighted her 1-under round of 71 with an eagle on the 18th hole. She drove the 272-yard par-4 before sinking her putt.

Lee will take a four-shot lead over Pamicka Marinello (CC of Buffalo) into today's final round.

The lone area rep, OCC's Vanessa Fassler, shot an 87 that included three birdies and three pars. Fassler is 15.

The boys and girls leaders are expected to tee off around 9:30 a.m. today, with the boys starting on the back nine and the girls on the front. The boys junior division leaders will tee off around 1:30 p.m.
