Fly Creek resident Bruce Miller advanced to the match-play portion of the New York State Amateur golf tournament before falling in the round of 36 at Pine Haven Country Club in Guilderland on Thursday.
Miller, 37, shot rounds of 72 and 76 on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, during stroke play at the par-71 course. His 148 total was two strokes under the cutline and qualified him for match play, when the field was cut from 158 players to 36.
He fell to Jamie Miller of Buffalo, 3-and-2, on Thursday.
"Today, I struggled with my swing," said Bruce Miller, who pulled to one down by holing a 10-footer for birdie on the par-4 13th hole before losing the next two holes. "I held it together enough to stay in the match. He struggled as well. It wasn't pretty golf. We each had one birdie."
This marks the second straight year Bruce Miller has qualified for match play. He lost in the first round last year as well.
Miller is Edmeston Central's golf coach.
