Sports festival continues Sunday

The Oneonta State women's soccer team and the Headwaters Soccer Club will continue its 18th annual Powerade Indoor/Outdoor Soccer and Swim Festival for youths in grades 1-6 on Sunday.

Boys and girls will be placed on teams and will play, swim, watch videos and receive skills instruction from members of the O-State women's soccer team.

Participants must bring snacks, sneakers and swimsuits. All activities will be held at O-State's Chase Physical Education Building, as well as Astro Turf Field during the April-May sessions (weather permitting). Check-in is at Chase.

Pre-registration costs $15 per child per date or $20 the day of each session. Festival times are from noon-4 p.m. Sunday and May 4.

Spring turkey season starts May 1

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced Monday that the 2008 spring season opens for all hunters on May 1.

A special Youth Turkey Hunting Weekend is scheduled for April 26-27. Youths ages 12-15 who hold a junior hunting license and a turkey permit are eligible to hunt. Youths ages 12-13 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or relative older than 21, with written permission from their parent or legal guardian. Youths ages 14-15 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or an adult older than 18, with written permission from their parent or legal guardian;

Accompanying adults must have current hunting licenses and turkey permits. Adults may assist youths, including calling, but may not carry a firearm or bow, or kill or attempt to kill a wild turkey during the youth hunt.

Shooting hours are a half-hour before sunrise to noon each day. The bag limit for the youth weekend is one bearded bird, which becomes part of the youth's regular-season bag limit of two bearded birds. A second bird may be taken beginning May 1.

The regular spring season runs May 1-31. Hunters must have turkey hunting permits in addition to their small game hunting or sportsman license. Shooting hours are a half-hour before sunrise to noon each day, and hunters may take two bearded turkeys during the spring season but not on the same day.

Hunters may only use a shotgun and shot sizes no larger than No. 2 or smaller than No. 8 or with a bow and arrow. Successful hunters must call 1-866-426-3778 within 48 hours to report any turkey shot.

Baseball event set for May 3

Oneonta will host a local qualifying event for the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition on May 3 at Damaschke Field.

There is no cost to participate. The event is open to boys and girls ages 7-14 as of July 17, 2008. Youths will compete for sectional berths in their respective age-groups (7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14). Yankee Stadium will host the national finals during MLB's All-Star Week.

Parents or guardians must fill out the proper forms and present birth certificates to the Brenner Recreation Center in Neahwa Park to pre-register participants. Forms are available at the recreation office.

Youth parade in Worcester on May 3

The Worcester Baseball Organization, Inc. will hold a Little League and Girls Softball Opening Day Parade at 9 a.m. May 3 at Worcester Central.

All players must report by 8:30 a.m. May 3 for the parade, which will begin on Main Street and end at the Little League field. Team pictures will follow Opening Day ceremonies.

The WBO, which is seeking volunteers to umpire little league games and to coach at the little league and T-ball levels, also will hold registration from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the M&M Building.

O-State banquet set for May 6

Oneonta State will host its 19th annual Athletic Awards Banquet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 6 in the Hunt Union Ballroom.

The banquet, which will honor the college's top student-athletes, will follow a reception for seniors from 5-6:15 p.m. May 6 at the Waterfront Cafe.

Fisk to appear at Cooperstown Classic

National Baseball Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk will attend the Cooperstown Classic, a Triple-A baseball game between the Syracuse Chiefs and the Rochester Red Wings on May 18 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.

The Chiefs announced Fisk's appearance this past Tuesday. Fisk played his final minor league season in 1971 with the IL's Louisville Colonels. He will throw out the first pitch and will attend the 6-8 p.m. postgame reception at the Baseball Hall. The reception also will feature appearances by players from the Chiefs and Red Wings.

Men's baseball league seeks players

The Leatherstocking Baseball League is inviting men ages 22 and older to sign-up for its 2008 season, which will run from late May to early August.

Teams from Oneonta, Edmeston, Milford and Cooperstown will compete in the league, which is open to players of all skill levels. Games are professionally umpired and there is a fee to participate.

SUNY Delhi swimming set

SUNY Delhi will host summer swimming programs for youths and adults beginning June 30.

Community swimming lessons will run between 9 a.m.-noon in the Kunsela Hall pool. Classes include American Red Cross Levels I-VI, Basic Water Rescue, infant/toddler/preschoolers program and a Level VI diving class. Swim team practice is also available.

Residents of Bovina, Meredith, Delhi and Hamden should contact their village clerks to find out the cost of enrollment. Cost for residents outside these areas is $45 per person per session

Water aerobics at SUNY Delhi

SUNY Delhi will host water aerobics classes from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays during the summer session. Cost is $45 per person.

Delhi's summer pool schedule is as follows:

Monday-Friday: Swim practice, noon-1 p.m.; lap swim, 1-1:30 p.m.; open swim, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Monday-Thursday: Open swim, 5-6 p.m.

Cost for daily use is $3 per person. Pool passes are available.

O-State to host summer wrestling camp

Ken Chertow's Gold Medal Training Camp System for wrestling will return to Oneonta State for the third consecutive year from June 28-July 3. The camp is open to wrestlers of all skill levels and ages and features options for commuter and overnight campers.
