Unatego girl wins wrestling title

Victoria Elwell, a seventh-grader at Unatego Junior-Senior High, finished first in her weight class during the United States Girls' Wrestling Association State Tournament at Cobleskill-Richmondville High this past Saturday.

Elwell, 13, won the 87-pound weight class, which featured three girls. She advanced to the USGWA Nationals, which run March 29-30 in Livonia, Mich.

Little League tryouts start Tuesday

Oneonta Little League will hold registrations and tryouts from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Hartwick College's Binder Gymnasium.

Players must be ages 8-12 by April 30 to be eligible. All players, including returners, must register. Players ages 10-12 who are not already on a major league team must try out.

Cost to register is $50, although financial assistance is available if needed. Birth certificates and three proofs of residency are required at registration.

Wrestling clinics to continue

The Red Dragon Wrestling Clinic Series will continue to run Tuesday and Thursday nights through April 22 in the wrestling room of Oneonta State's Chase Physical Education Building.

The elementary school division meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and will be followed by the middle/high school division from 7:30-9 p.m.

Cost is $45 and includes a T-shirt. Checks should be made payable to Oneonta State Athletics-Wrestling.

Golf courses to hold meetings

The Woodhaven Park Golf Course in West Oneonta will hold its league meetings at 7 p.m. from March 31-April 3. For more information, call 607-267-4367.

The Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin will hold meetings for its Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Men's Twilight leagues at 5:30 p.m. April 1 in the clubhouse. For more information, call 607-829-2100.

The Colonial Ridge Golf Course will hold organizational meetings for its Tuesday Night Men's League at 6 p.m. this Tuesday and its Wednesday Night Men's League at 6 p.m. this Wednesday. All Colonial Ridge leagues are open to members and non-members. For information, call the pro shop at 607-263-5291.

Futsol tourneys to run March 29-30

The Schenevus Soccer Club will host its fourth annual Futsol tournaments on March 29 and 30.

Boys and girls high school players will compete March 29, followed by boys and girls in grades 7-8 on March 30. The SSC is seeking teams for the tournaments, which are not co-ed. Roster sizes should be 6-to-10 players. Each side will play four in the field and one goalie at a time. Cost is $80 per team, and registration deadline is today.

SADD Run set for April 6

Registration for the 10th annual Students Against Drunk Driving Strides For Safety 5K Run/Walk begins at 11:30 a.m. April 6 at Oneonta High. A health fair will begin at the same time.

The SADD run/walk starts at 1 p.m. April 6.

Pre-registration for the run/walk, which guarantees a race shirt, ends today. Registration forms are available at all Oneonta City Schools, Franklin and Laurens central schools and online at www.oneontacsd.org/hs/SADD/run.html.

This event raises money for local SADD chapters. The health fair includes activities such as a dental van, a fire bus, a rock-climbing wall, bike-helmet fittings, face painting and "Operation Safe Child" fingerprinting, among others.

Soccer camp to run April 14-16

The Junior Hawks Mini Soccer Camp for youths ages 6-14 will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 14-16 at Hartwick College. Space is limited. Cost is $50 and a lunch program is available. For more information, call Hartwick men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre at 607-431-4712.

Former area wrestling coach retires

Former SUNY Delhi wrestling coach Frank Millard has retired from the sport after 45 years of service.

Millard has spent his last 23 years as the head coach at The Northfield Mount Hermon Prep School in Northfield, Mass.

He also coached 14 years at SUNY Delhi, one at SUNY Potsdam, five at The Manlius Military School and two at Carthage Central, where he started his career. Millard, a member of the New York chapter of the National the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, is the coordinator of physical education at Northfield. He retired with an all-time dual-meet record of 718-204-3.

He led Delhi to a record 92 consecutive dual-meet wins from 1978-83. Following that streak, his Broncos went 36-0. Millard then moved on to Northfield.

Millard's final season at Northfield ended with the school's first New England Prep School Championship. Northfield also won its fifth Class A League championship and finished 21-1 in dual meets this past season.

Golf course nominated for award

The 13th hole at Colonial Ridge Golf Course in Laurens has been nominated for John Deere Credit's "Most Beautifully Brutal Golf Holes in North America," the golf and turf leasing business announced Tuesday.

The company said the 120-yard, par-3 hole was nominated for its forced carry to a 2,000-square-foot green that slopes 30 degrees from left to right toward a long bunker.
