Unatego's Herodes wins 200th

As much as she tried to keep it a secret, Unatego girls soccer coach Sue Herodes couldn't hide her 200th career victory.

Herodes earned the milestone victory at home with a 1-0 Midstate Athletic Conference defeat of rival Sidney on Wednesday.

Katya Harris scored off an assist from Jessie LaPointe with 7 minutes, 30 seconds remaining to snap a scoreless tie. LaPointe sent a throughball past two defenders to Harris, who went one-on-one with Sidney goalie Stephanie Simonds (nine saves).

Harris received the ball at the top of the penalty box, took one touch to about 12 yards and shot to the right corner as Simonds charged.

"It was beautiful," Herodes said of the goal. "Katya has been playing defense all year and I moved her to midlfield with about 20 minutes left. ... It was a very composed goal. It was very pretty."

Herodes improved to 200-93-24 over 17 years with the Spartans (11-2-2 overall, 8-2-2 MAC).

"I didn't even tell the girls about this," Herodes said. "(Former Unatego athletic director Roger Brown) leaked it out at his retirement party."

Herodes said she's loved coaching at Unatego for her entire career and has enjoyed each of her teams.

"I wouldn't trade these Unatego kids for anybody," she said. "It is very much a we thing for me. I'm not the one putting the ball in the net. I'm not the one running around, working hard in practice and the games. I just do what I can do to get them ready. There have been many kids that I do feel many times they have wanted to do it for me, which is a wonderful feeling.

Following the game, Herodes said she was presented with flowers and a banner and parents had brought a cake to celebrate the milestone.

The Spartans are a half-game up on Sidney with two league games remaining. Unadilla Valley, which is in third, has three league losses. Unatego plays host to Greene on Friday and visits Bainbridge-Guilford on Tuesday. Should the Spartans win out, it'll win with MAC championship, Herodes said.

"This win was big for the girls," Herodes said. "Sidney came out and played hard. We finally settled down halfway through the first half and took the game back, controlled the game more. We needed this game. We have been so up and down this year."

Gabi May made five saves for Unatego.

"We just couldn't get it in the net," Pittelli said. "We had a few opportunities. We're playing with people in different positions with Kelsie out."

Johnson City 5, Oneonta 1

Dani Brkovic scored three times to help visiting Johnson City snap Oneonta High's five-game win streak in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

Oneonta's Shane Burgher made it 3-1 early in the second half and OHS coach Alex Brannan said his team missed two bit opportunities that would have tied the score.

"It was a lot closer than the score," said Brannan, whose team was outshot, 14-13. "We just couldn't get the second goal. They didn't put the game away until there was 6:59 left. It was 3-1 for a long time. We put a shot over the crossbar with an open net and also pushed a shot wide."

Ryan Greenberg made six saves for the Yellowjackets (10-6, 8-6), who were without starting goalie Chris Hayen. Hayen rolled his right ankle in practice Monday and sat the game out.

The Yellowjackets are off until the Section Four Class A Tournament starts.

Cooperstown had a 25-6 advantage in shots. Sauquoit Valley goalie Matt Foster made 18 saves.

"It was a very frustrating game," Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. "Their goalie had the game of his life. He made several outstanding saves. We hit the crossbar, we hit each post. Sauquoit Valley was defensive-minded and they gave us all we could handle.

"We had goals we thought were going in," he said. "It looked like there was saran wrap over the goal."

The Redskins (14-1-1, 9-0) visit Sherburne-Earlville on Friday.
