Hornets cruise to fourth straight MAC crown

Savannah Murray scored a game-high 17 points and Amanda Frayer had 16 to lead Harpursville to a 48-27 girls basketball drubbing of Oxford in the Midstate Athletic Conference championship game Saturday at Oneonta State.

The Hornets, who won their fourth straight MAC title, are tied with Section Nine's Kingston Coleman Catholic for the state's No. 1 ranking in Class C. Both teams are 18-0.

Harpursville opened Saturday's final with a 12-0 run en route to a 24-12 lead at halftime. The Hornets followed with a 9-5 third quarter that featured two deep three-pointers by Murray, whose minutes have been limited the past four games because of an injury.

"She gave us a big lift tonight," Harpursville coach Kurt Ehrensbeck said. "Oxford did a very nice job defensively on (Miranda) Drummond, so it very important for us to get big games from the other girls."

Harpursville scoring leader Drummond scored eight points for the Hornets, who went 14-for-19 from the free throw line.

Jackie Heggie's 14 points paced Oxford, which shot 2-for-25 at the foul line.

Harpursville is seeded third for the Section Four Class C Tournament and opens against No. 14 Groton (8-8) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Oxford (10-7) is the 13th seed and visits No. 4 Marathon (14-3) at the same time.

Harpursville and Oxford are on opposite sides of the bracket, meaning they can only meet again this season if they both reach the March 3 championship game at the Broome County Arena.

Lansing (16-2) is the No. 1 seed and Watkins Glen (16-2) is No. 2. Lansing, Watkins Glen, Marathon and Groton all hail from the Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
