The 34th annual Mayor's Cup soccer tournaments run today through Sunday at Hartwick College and Oneonta State.
The Cup features the longest-running Division I men's tournament in the country, as well as D-III play for men and women.
Syracuse and Loyola open the D-I men's tournament at 5 p.m. today at Hartwick's Elmore Field, where the Hawks and Bucknell will follow at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Syracuse and Bucknell play at noon before Hartwick and Loyola meet at 2:30 p.m. Teams from the Oneonta Youth Soccer Association will play exhibition matches during breaks in the D-I men's tournament.
The head coaches for Loyola and Syracuse have area ties. Mark Mettrick, who earned All-American honors for Hartwick in 1985 and 1987, coaches Loyola. Dean Foti, an Oneonta native, coaches Syracuse.
The D-III men's Cup starts at 1 p.m. today, when O-State plays William Patterson at Red Dragon Field. Skidmore and Western New England follow at 4 p.m. The tournament continues at Red Dragon Field at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the championship game at 4 p.m.
O-State also begins the D-III women's Cup, with a 1:30 p.m. match Saturday against the College of New Jersey at Elmore Field. Hartwick and Rowan meet at 4 p.m. the same day at the same site.
The women's Cup then shifts to Red Dragon Field on Sunday, when O-State plays Rowan at 1:30 p.m. and Hartwick meets TCNJ at 4 p.m. Admission is free to all Mayor's Cup games.

Rensselaer 8, Hartwick 1
Visiting Rensselaer took a 2-1 lead after doubles play before sweeping Hartwick in singles competition to win the season opener for both teams.
Jennifer Lin and Kim Post earned the Hawks' point with an 8-4 victory over Caroline Albrecht and Brianna Dickie at second doubles. Lin also pushed Jessica Sitzer to a tiebreaker at second singles but fell, 6-1, 7-5, 8-6.
Hartwick hosts RIT at 1 p.m. Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference opener.

Cross Country
SUNY Cobleskill junior Kevin Wippel earned North Eastern Athletic Conference's male cross country student-athlete of the week, the Fighting Tigers announced Thursday.
Wippel placed eighth out of 75 finishers last Saturday during the Knight's Joust Invitational in Latham. He covered the 5-mile course in 28 minutes, 32 seconds to help Cobleskill score 66 points and tie for second out of seven teams.
Wippel earned First Team All-NEAC honors last season for finishing second in the NEAC Championships.
Cobleskill will host the 15-team Steven A. Warde Invitational at 11 a.m. this Saturday.
Football
Hartwick College's offensive line was recognized on the d3football.com Team of the Week for its efforts in last Saturday's 49-25 season-opening win over Morrisville State.
Sophomores Gary Chrys (left tackle), Vince Palmieri (left guard) and Austin Restaino (center); senior right guard Ryan Chronister and junior right tackle Chad Cassidy helped the Hawks amass 458 yards of offense. The Hawks rushed for 197 yards, including 167 from senior Tosh DeMulder, a Unatego graduate who earned Daily Star Player of the Year honors in 2003. The line also prevented Morrisville from sacking first-year starting quarterback Brian Radley, who threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
Chrys and Chronister also helped Hartwick's offensive line to the same honor last season, when they helped the Hawks gain 487 yards against St. John Fisher. The Cardinals were ranked 10th at the time.
Hartwick plays Salve Regina at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown, R.I.
Women's Soccer
Downsville graduate Stephanie Shellman and SUNY Delhi teammate Amanda Porco received NJCAA Division III players of the week honors Wednesday.
Shellman, a sophomore, had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory over Albany College of Pharmacy. Senior captain Porco earned the shutout against Albany COP. She also held two-time defending NJCAA D-III champion Broome Community College scoreless in regulation before the Broncos fell, 1-0, in overtime. Porco had 26 saves over the two games.
Volleyball
SUNY Cobleskill named junior outside hitter Andrianna Lyons its athlete of the week.
The Fly Creek resident and Cooperstown graduate led Cobleskill to a 3-1 victory at Green Mountain College last Friday with 13 kills, six digs, two aces and a block. The Fighting Tigers won their season opener, 25-6, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.
Cobleskill's next match is 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at Paul Smith's College.
