Oneonta Post 259's three-game winning streak in the Broome County Hall of Fame Classic ended Sunday with a 13-5 Legion baseball loss to Haddon Heights, N.J. in the second of two tournament semifinals at Conlon Field in Binghamton.
The Green Wave qualified for the semifinals of the 12-team tournament with a 7-2 victory over Binghamton Post 1645 on Saturday night. Oneonta, Binghamton and Shrub Oak finished tied for second in their division with 3-2 records, but Oneonta allowed the fewest runs to win the tiebreaker and advance to the semifinals.
Haddon Heights scored six runs in the first inning and three more in the second off of losing pitcher Sean Getman. During its six-run first, the New Jersey squad executed three bunt singles and received a two-run double from Jon Michnick.
Haddon Heights fell Sunday in the championship game, 6-5, to Hamilton, N.J., which beat Oneonta, 11-0, on Wednesday.
"Those two New Jersey teams were two of the top teams in the tournament and they both beat us pretty decent, but it's good competition and will help us in the long run," Oneonta coach Mike Jester said.
Oneonta scored three times in the fourth inning to close to 13-4. Mike Calkins led off with a double, and Zach King and Ryne Rivino had RBI doubles in the inning.
The Green Wave closed the scoring in the fifth, when Getman doubled and scored on a double by Ben Payton.
Winning pitcher Andy Gallagher struck out six and walked two in a seven-hitter.
Against Binghamton on Saturday, the Green Wave needed a victory and had to allow no more than five runs to advance to the semifinals.
Winning pitcher David Wright (4-1) threw a seven-hitter that included four strikeouts and no walks.
"David pitched a fantastic to get us into the semifinals," Jester said. "We couldn't give up more than five runs and (Wright) was only one who knew it. I told him and he pitched a heck of a ballgame. It was the best fastball I've seen from him all year. He was hitting his spots and had pretty good command of his curveball."
Oneonta scored four runs in the second inning. Wright had an RBI single and Ben Moxley's two-run double to right made it 4-0.
Wright finished 2-for-4, and Dan Hodne contributed two hits and scored twice.
After losing to Hamilton and Shrub Oak in its first two tournament games, Oneonta beat Severna Park (Md.), 5-3, before downing Utica Adrean, 15-3.
"It's good for us," Jester said. "We played some pretty good baseball this week. It felt good getting into the semifinals."
The Green Wave (17-8) will play Sidney at 6 p.m. today at Damaschke Field.
Oneonta will host its 15th annual Green Wave Wood Bat Tournament from Friday through Sunday at Damaschke Field, Oneonta High and Neahwa Park. The eight-team tournament is sponsored by the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.
