Not even the seven Hall of Famers who'll suit up for the Hall of Fame Classic on June 19 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown can boast of winning two MVP awards.
Dale Murphy can. The Hall announced Wednesday that Murphy _ a former standout outfielder with the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies _ will play in the third annual exhibition game.
Murphy won back-to-back National League MVP awards with the Braves in 1982 and 1983. From 1982-87, Murphy won two home run titles, twice led the league in RBIs, had a 30-home run/30-stolen base season and won five Gold Gloves in center field. Over an 18-year career, Murphy finished with 398 homers and 1,266 RBIs.
The seven-inning game that will include Hall of Famers Andre Dawson, Goose Gossage, Phil Niekro, Tony Perez, Jim Rice, Ozzie Smith and Dick Williams will begin at 2 p.m. June 19. Other former major leaguers who'll play are Frank Catalanotto, Steve Garvey, Doug Glanville, Bill Lee, Willie Wilson, Rick Wise and Dmitri Young.
Tickets go on sale to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday. For more information, call 607-547-0397 or visit www.baseballhall.org.
