I-88 Speedway openers moved

I-88 Speedway in Afton has pushed a test-and-tune session and its season opener back one week each because poor weather is expected this week.

The track's test-and-tune session has moved from this Friday to April 15. Grandstand admission is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item.

As a result, I-88 Speedway's opener has moved from April 15 to 7 p.m. April 22.

General admission is $10 for adults. A Family Fun 5 Pack (admissions for two adults and three children, five hot dogs and five sodas) is available for $30.

The speedway's tentative schedule includes weekly events through the end of September and the Spooktacular in late October. CRSA Sprints will race the second Friday of each month from May to August.

Mid-season championship nights are set for July 1 (modifieds and IMCA modifieds) and July 15 (sportsmen, street stocks and FWD 4-cylinders). Racing also will take place during the Afton Fair on July 22.

Golf tourney set for May 14

Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties will hold its third annual golf tournament at 12:30 p.m. May 14 at the Oneonta Country Club.

Entry fee is $75 per golfer and includes golf, cart and buffet. All proceeds will benefit the Catholic Charities' community services.

Entry forms are available at the Catholic Charities office at 176 Main St. in Oneonta, at the Oneonta Country Club and online at www.charitiesccdo.org.

PONY registration extended

The Oneonta Recreation Department has extended the registration period for its Youth Spring Training Baseball Team through Friday.

Players may register between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at the Recreation Office in Neahwa Park. Players must be ages 13-15 as of May 1, 2011, and must live or attend school in the Oneonta City School District, but they cannot be part of a high school team.

Birth certificates and registration/release forms are required to join the team, which will practice at Neahwa Park for the upcoming Otsenango PONY League season.

The Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin will hold all of its league meetings at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the clubhouse.

Hartwick offering swim lessons

Hartwick College's swimming and diving teams is offering swimming lessons through May 22 at Moyer Pool.

Cost is $15 for a 30-minute lesson, which features one-on-one instruction from a Hartwick team member.

Half-hour lessons will be available during the following time frames: Monday-Thursday, 3-4:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m.; Friday, 3-3:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Sunday, 2-6 p.m.

USPP spring race April 16

The Upper Susquehanna Pedalers and Paddlers Spring Race will begin with a pre-race meeting at 11 a.m. April 16 in Oneonta, rain or shine.

All classes (NYMCRA Point, Pro, Recreation and Recreation Mixed) will start at the Route 205 Bridge in Oneonta and finish at the Otego fishing access. Recreation classes, C-1W and any class with youth will finish when reaching the Otego access, after 12 miles. All other classes will proceed to Wells Bridge, turn a buoy and return to the Otego fishing access to complete an 18-mile course.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. April 16 at the start of the race. Pre-registration costs $15 per amateur paddler and $20 per pro and must be received before race day. Make checks payable to Upper Susquehanna Pedalers & Paddlers and mail to Jeff Shultis, 7 Diane Drive, Otego, NY 13825.

Race-day registration is $18 per amateur and $25 per pro. Registration forms are available online at uspp.pbworks.com.

Hall's youth week runs April 16-22

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will host its annual Youth Baseball Week from April 16-22, when most area students will be on spring/Easter break.

The week begins at 7 p.m. April 16 with the Extra Innings Overnight program, which invites families to spend a night in the museum's Plaque Gallery. The program is designed for youths ages 7-12 and their parents and includes after-hours access to the Hall's public areas, special hands-on programs and a movie in the Bullpen Theater.

Hunter education course starts soon

The Davenport Fire Department will host a hunter education course from 5:30-9 p.m. April 18, 20 and 21.

O-State to hold soccer camp in April

The Oneonta State men's soccer team will host an indoor-outdoor soccer camp from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 18-20 at O-State.

Cost is $50 per camper. Registration will be accepted the morning of April 18 at Alumni Field House. Pick-ups and drop-offs will take place at the college's Turf/Track facility. Campers may purchase a pizza lunch at $4 per day.

The camp, which will serve as a fundraiser for O-State's soccer program, is designed for boys and girls ages 7-14.

Hartwick College will host its annual Junior Hawks Mini Soccer Camp from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 18-20.

Colonial Ridge Golf also will begin its Thursday Morning Senior League on April 21. This league is a social gathering open to men and women of all skill levels ages 60 and older. Participants may play when they like as there is no commitment to golf every week.

Oneonta CC to start public league

The Oneonta Country Club will hold a weekly public golf league at 3 p.m. Thursdays from April 28-Sept. 1.

The cost to join the league is $40, which will help cover prizes and league expenses. Greens fees are an additional $10 per week and carts, which are optional, cost $8.

The OCC will host an inaugural league meeting at 5:30 p.m. April 14 at the clubhouse. All participants are encouraged to attend.

Oneonta to host baseball events

The Oneonta City Recreation Department will host Sandlot Day and an MLB Pitch, Hit and Run local qualifier from 5-8 p.m. April 29 at Field 4 in Neahwa Park.

Sandlot Day is designed for youths of all ages to play the sport of their choice. The Pitch, Hit and Run skills competition is for boys and girls ages 7-14, with the top performances earning a chance to compete at the regional level.

Cobleskill to host Timbersports event

SUNY Cobleskill will host the Northeast Qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series _ the nation's premier lumberjack competition _ April 29-30 at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds.

The Fighting Tigers will field a team for the collegiate portion of the series, which also will feature squads from Colby, Dartmouth, SUNY-ESF, SUNY ESF Ranger School, Finger Lakes Community College, Nova Scotia Agricultural, Paul Smith's, Unity, Connecticut, Maine-Orono, New Hampshire and Vermont. The Northeast winner will advance to the Collegiate Championship at the Oregon State Fair from Aug. 26-28.

Cobleskill placed fifth during the 2010 Northeast Collegiate Qualifier at Paul Smith's. Tyler White, who graduated last year, received a wild-card entry into the championship round.

The April 29-30 event also will feature the Northeast Professional Qualifier, which pits 10 of the region's best professional lumberjacks in a six-discipline, wood-chopping competition. The top four competitors will advance to the U.S. Championship at the Oregon State Fair.

ESPNU and ESPN2 will record the Northeast Qualifiers.

Baseball club accepting registrations

The Stamford Blue Jays are accepting registrations for their new 14U baseball team.

Players born after April 30, 1996 may join. Players must travel to local games and out-of-town tournaments.

The Blue Jays Baseball Club also will host a high school exhibition series near Cooperstown in late April, as well as three-game summer tournaments for players ages 13-18.

UVSC sets 2011 schedule

Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin announced its schedule for the 2011 season.

The UVSC will start with the District Three MX, featuring select quad classes, on May 1, June 5 and June 19.

The ATV National Weekend, highlighted by Round Nine of the ATV National Championship, follows from July 15-17.

The track will host its featured summer event, the Rockstar Energy Drink Unadilla National Pro National MX Weekend, from Aug. 12-14.

UVSC's final event will be the Grand National Cross Country from Sept. 10-11.

Modified series to stop at I-88 Speedway

The Thunder on the Thruway Modified Series will make two stops at I-88 Speedway in Afton this season.

These events will have two of the highest purses at the speedway, with $5,000 going to the winner and $250 to take the green flag for the 50-lap features.

I-88 Speedway joins with Utica-Rome Speedway and Fonda Speedway in this series, which features some of the top modified drivers in the Northeast.

The series begins May 8 at Utica-Rome and continues June 8 at Fonda and June 28 at I-88 Speedway.

The second installments will run July 26 at Fonda, July 28 at Utica-Rome and Aug. 30 at I-88 Speedway.

The series closes Sept. 9 at Utica-Rome and Sept. 25 at Fonda.

Women's handgun training June 11

The Oneonta Sportsmen's Club will sponsor Women on Target from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11 at its facility at 251 Rod and Gun Club Road in Oneonta.

Cost is $35 for this event, which is an introduction to handgun shooting with about four hours of classroom lecture and two-to-three hours on the range. Basic firearm safety, the variety of handguns and how different types of actions work will be covered, along with ammunition, cleaning, storage and basic shooting techniques.

Headwaters to hold soccer series

The 22nd annual Headwaters Summer Camp Series for area youth soccer players will begin with the Volkswagen of Oneonta Camp, which runs June 27-July 1 at Otego Elementary.

Boys and girls ages 7-17 may participate in the series, which also features team camps. Cost is $60 per week, which includes a T-shirt and a water bottle.

Camps run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.

Pigskin Classic set for Aug. 5-7

The 2011 Chenango County Pigskin Classic is accepting applications for its 7-on-7 youth football tournament, which runs Aug. 5-7 in North Norwich.

The 20-team event is open to youths ages 13-18, who will compete in divisions for ages 13-15 and 18-and-under.

Cost is $250 per team, with a minimum of 10 player and a maximum of 12. High school teams are welcome.

SUNY Delhi's golf-swing analysis lab will be open from 5-8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays in Room 12 of Evenden Tower on campus.

Delhi's swing lab includes two hitting bays, a V1 video analysis, a launch monitor and a TOMI putting analyzer. Lessons by Delhi's Professional Golf Management majors are available by request.

O-State wrestling to host tourney, clinics

Registration for the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon Wrestling Clinic Series and the Red Dragon Wrestling Festival is open.

The clinic series will be offered Tuesday and Thursday nights through April 14 in the wrestling room of the Chase PE Building. Elementary divisions will focus on fundamentals and techniques from 6-7 p.m. each night. Middle/high school divisions, which will focus on drills, strategy and training, will follow from 7-8 p.m.

Registration costs $45 per child.

The Red Dragon Wrestling Festival is set for Saturday at Chase Gymnasium.

The festival will feature an open wrestling tournament and developmental clinics. Age divisions range from 6-and-under to over-19. Entry fee is $15.

City accepting softball sign-ups

The Oneonta Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its upcoming men's and women's softball seasons.

Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Cost is $800 per team, with a minimum deposit of $400 required at the time of registration. The balance will be due by June 10.

Each team must submit an entry form and a check or money order payable to "City of Oneonta" to register. Cash payments will not be accepted.

To register, visit the Recreation Office in Neahwa Park during regular office hours. Registration is open until 5 p.m. April 22.

The softball season begins May 23. Men will play Tuesdays and Thursdays and women will play Mondays and Wednesdays. All games will be played at Neahwa and Catella parks.

Players must be at least 18 years old to participate. Team rosters must be submitted by May 16.
