Hartwick College scored first Thursday, but ninth-ranked San Diego State answered with five straight goals en route to a 16-6 women's water polo victory.
Hartwick's Lisa Bass squeezed a shot past goalkeeper Kelly Campoli through the left side 1 minute, 55 seconds into match to give the Hawks (2-2) a 1-0 lead.
San Diego State closed the first quarter on a 4-0 run that included two goals from Amber Pezzolla, who scored less than 30 seconds into the second period to make it 5-1.
The 15th-ranked Hawks made it 5-2 when Sami Capparelli scored on a wraparound attempt with 5:21 left in the first half. The Aztecs (5-0) had the next three goals before Allison Kosich scored with 26 seconds to go before halftime, pulling Hartwick to 8-3.
Capparelli had Hartwick's only goal in the third quarter, which ended with the Hawks trailing, 12-4.
San Diego State scored the first two goals of the final period, but Lara Dendy Young and Cayley Tonkin had back-to-back goals to cap the scoring for the Hawks.
Hartwick continues its California trip this weekend, when it plays CSU-Northridge in the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego.
