UV girls earn key MAC victory

Despite gimmick defenses designed to contain them, Jordan Anderson and Amanda Off scored 21 and 16 points, respectively, to lead host Unadilla Valley to a 56-41 Midstate Athletic Conference girls basketball victory over visiting Unatego on Friday.

Coming into Friday UV, Oxford and Bainbridge-Guilford all had three league losses and were tied for third in the division behind Harpursville and Unatego. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.

"That's a huge win," UV coach Brandi Backus said.

Off had nine points in the first quarter as UV took a 14-9 lead. The Storm led, 36-29, entering the fourth quarter. Then Anderson scored 13 points, including a 9-for-14 performance from the free throw line.

"They were playing box-and-one and triangle-and-two on (Anderson) and Amanda (Off)," Backus said. "The other girls stepped up and did their job."

Sarah Mannina scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the first half for the Spartans, who have two league losses.

"We started pressing in the second half," Backus said. "We didn't get steals, but we slowed them down a lot and we tried to be aware of Mannina shooting."

Casey Manzanero contributed 10 points for Unatego.

Unadilla Valley (9-4, 8-3) plays host to Hunter-Tannersville at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Redskins (13-3, 8-1) turned a 24-all tie into a 42-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"I guess we just changed our minds at halftime and were able to get separation," Redskins coach Mike Niles said. "They're a pretty competitive group of kids. I just told them you have to dig deep."

Cooperstown, coming off a 47-43 loss at Hamilton on Wednesday, received 16 points apiece from Erkson and Sumer Murdock, and 13 points from Nicole Cring.

"In the fourth quarter, we made some adjustments and our defense provided offense for us," Franklin coach Mike Dutcher said. "We needed to get a spark and our intensity got going. The fourth quarter has been our best quarter all season."

Terrano also had five steals _ four coming in the fourth quarter.

"We did not shoot the ball that well, but give our girls credit, when we're not shooting a high percentage we turn to our defense," Dutcher said.

Dutcher added that the inside play from Laurens' Jackie Brownell and Ali Robbins gave his problems through the first three quarters. Both players finished with 12 points.
