O-State 82, Brockport 46
Samantha Szkotak had 18 points to lead four Oneonta State players in double figures as the Red Dragons cruised to a SUNY Athletic Conference victory Friday.
Kate Wilverding and came off the bench to score 16 points. She went 5-for-6 from the field, including 4 of 5 from three-point range. Freshman Sarah Longto contributed 14 points and made all seven of her shots from the field. Wilverding and Longto had their season highs in scoring.
Madison Slagle finished with 10 points for O-State, which jumped to a 7-0 lead.
The Red Dragons (13-6, 11-2) are at Geneseo State on Saturday.
Hartwick 71, Alfred 41
Maria Foglia scored 17 points and host Hartwick had a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint en route to an easy Empire 8 Conference victory at home.
The Hawks (17-3, 9-1) scored the game's first 11 points and then scored 16 straight points to start the second half _ that spurt ending with Hartwick ahead, 54-28.
The win coupled with an Ithaca victory over Nazareth tonight sewed up a spot in the E8 semifinals for Hartwick. The Hawks' only two previous appearances occurred in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
Carlee Hirt and Lee Anduini had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Hawks, who shot 47 percent from the field.
Cooperstown graduate Samantha Fox had six rebounds and two blocks for Hartwick, which hosts Elmira on Saturday.
Note: Hartwick's men beat Alfred, 64-63, in an Empire 8 game Friday. No other information was available at press time.
HONORS
O-State men's lacrosse
Oneonta State junior Jimmy van de Veerdonk earned preseason D-III All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse.
Van de Veerdonk was among six faceoff specialists named as an honorable mention. He also was one of eight SUNY Athletic Conference to be selected.
Last season, van de Veerdonk won 63 percent of his faceoffs. He also led the Red Dragons in scoring with 28 goals and 11 assists, and had a team-best 107 groundballs en route to being named a First Team all-SUNYAC performer.
O-State went 3-11 last season. The Red Dragons open their season at home against Clarkson on March 3.
Hartwick basketball
Hartwick basketball players Mark Blazek and Kate Purcell were named to the Capital One Academic All-District men's and women's teams, respectively.
The teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their performances on the court and in the classroom.
Blazek, a senior guard, earned the honor for the second time in three years. He has a 3.96 GPA as a biology/pre-physical therapy major. He's made the Dean's List every semester at Hartwick. On the court, he's averaging 16 points and leads the Hawks in made three-pointers (49) and three-point percentage (44.5).
A biology major, Purcell has a 3.73 GPA.
Purcell appears among the top 10 in the Empire 8 Conference in eight statistical categories: free throw percentage (fifth), three-point field goal percentage (fifth), three-pointers made (sixth), steals (seventh), defensive rebounds (seventh), assists (ninth), scoring (10th) and rebounding (10th).
She's also the reigning E8 Player of the Week.
