There will be more than flowers and plants on Saturday's "Gardens of Gilbertsville" tour to benefit the Gilbertsville Free Library. The event is being held in conjunction with Gilbertsville Community Days, which brings activities to the village Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The garden tour gets under way at 11 a.m., with maps available at the library during the day. Tickets are $10 per person, which includes a map for the self-guided tour in and around the village.
A highlight of the tour will be Southwind Farms NY, library committee fundraising member Joann Clarke said.
The 400-acre farm has mainly been used to raise standard-bred race horses, said Laura Burnside, who manages the facility with her husband, Kevin Burnside.
There have always been gardens, she said. But the owners, one of the nation's top racing horse breeders, have been focusing more on commercial food production lately.
To increase the potential, they added greenhouses last October. They are used to not only raise sprouts and microgreens, but also to create an ecosystem for the food fish, tilapia. One of the tanks is in operation, with the wastewater from the 45-50 fish being used to fertilize the plants. The soil serves as a filter, and the water is recycled back into the fish tank, Burnside said.
The other tanks are to be stocked in the future.
With the farm also raising such animals as chicken, sheep, poultry, and quail, as well as gardens, there is a lot for the whole family, Clarke said.
There will be refreshments served at the home of Becky Brannick, whose English-style country garden is also on the tour.
It is the only one that has been previously viewed by the public, according to a media release. Other gardens in the tour include the woodland plantings of Cindy and Mike Hall, the cottage-style design of Carol and Doug Exley and the informal settings of Michelle Birdsall.
At the informal country garden of Kathy and Michael Jeannette, visitors will have a chance to ask questions of Michael, who is a master gardener.
The library committee usually does a Christmas house tour, but with several gardens available this summer, the committee decided to present this activity now. The group that supplies needed funds for library maintenance will decide at a future meeting whether to do the yuletime event as well, Clarke said.
Also in conjunction with library community days, the library is hosting a croquet brunch at the Major's Inn on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The price for adults is $10, and 12 and under are $5. For brunch or garden tour details call 783-2731 or 783-3832.
Other events during the weekend are:
Friday: Buffet dinner at the Major's Inn from 5 to 7 p.m., with silent auction following. Dinner music will be performed by Jonathon Dokuchitz and Jacob Friedman. Proceeds will go to towards the Gilbertsville Post Office restoration fund.
Saturday: Starting at 9 a.m., the Gilbertsville Baptist Church will hold a "Christmas in July" bazaar, Christ Episcopal Church will hold a strawberry fest and petting zoo, and the First Presbyterian Church will hold a flea market with food. Other activities that day include a free concert by the Butternut Valley Boys from 1 to 3 p.m. on the side lawn of the Major's Inn. There is a perennial plant sale Friday and Saturday across from the post office. There also will be lawn and garage sales all three days.
