Walton names interim superintendent

Retired Walton Central School Superintendent George Mack was appointed as interim superintendent at the board of education's Aug. 7 meeting, board President Judith Breese said Monday.

He will serve Sept. 1 through Jan. 25, 2013, at a per diem rate of $550 per day. He will replace Thomas Austin, who announced his Sept. 1 retirement in July to take a position with a school insurance company. Mack will be paid $50 an hour as a consultant to work, as needed, with Austin during the transition.

Mack was with the district for 21 years before retiring in 2004. His previous interim superintendent work included in 2011 for the Downsville Central School District.

It is "critical" for Walton to have someone such as Mack during this transition, Breese said. Not only is he familiar with the district but he also is an "exemplary educator."

Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego Board of Cooperative Educational Services District Superintendent Bill Tammaro is scheduled to meet with the board of education today to assist in searching for a permanent replacement. Details such as salary and timetable for a search have yet to be determined, she said.
