Gov. Cuomo awards grants to local flood-hit communities

Four area communities ravaged by flooding last year have been awarded grants to help with the rebuilding, according to a Monday media release from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

This includes the village of Sidney, where Mayor Andrew Matviak said Monday that about 400 homes and a dozen businesses were hit during the storms.

The award was "very good news," he said. The village will use the $50,000 grant to develop a short- and long-term master recovery plan. That will make it possible to receive other grant funds to assist with the work, he said.

The town of Middletown was awarded $50,000 to work in partnership with the villages of Fleischmanns and Margaretville to develop a strategy to focus on the recovery of commercial and residential districts, according to the media release.

Middletown Supervisor Marjorie Miller said, "we're very pleased to be receiving it." A commission similar to one set up in Walton following 2006 flooding will be created, she said.

In addition, Fleischmanns received $49,588 for the work and Margaretville was awarded $50,000.

Mayors of both municipalities did not return calls for comment.

The applications for the grants were submitted Jan. 12. The second application for grants must be submitted by affected municipalities, counties or nonprofits by 4 p.m. March 1.
