Anti-fracking activist ends hunger strike

Anti-fracking activist Patrick McElligott of East Guilford, Chenango County, said Wednesday that he has ended the hunger strike he embarked upon in an effort to meet with a state senator who supports gas drilling.

McElligott said the hunger strike ended after eight days when he met in late January with Senate Deputy Majority Leader Tom Libous, R-Binghamton. He said he has since received "a fairly clean bill of health" from his doctor.

McElligott, a 53-year-old retired social worker, said he consumed only water and juice during an eight-day fast. He said he does not know how many pounds he shed during that time, noting, "I don't weigh myself."

McElligott said he met with Libous and his top aides for about 40 minutes. He said he began the protest because "it's important for an elected official to meet with the people he's supposed to represent."
