Morris to vote on $2.4M school plan

Morris Central School District voters will have a chance to decide next month on a revised capital project.

Voting on the $2.4 million proposal will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Feb. 29 in the school lobby. There are two community hearings that will be held in the school cafeteria: 7 p.m. Feb. 15 and 1 p.m. Feb. 23.

The new proposal was designed after the defeat of the $5.7 million project in August, Morris Central School Superintendent Matthew Sheldon said. It was defeated 185-to-99.

After discussing the situation with the appropriate school committee and conducting online surveys, the board found that most people supported the work on the main building but were against plans for a new bus garage.

The new proposal will include energy savings improvement, maintenance, work on the main building including repair of the gymnasium walls, technology upgrades and upgrading of the fire alarm so it works properly.

The project comes at a time when bonds on a previous project will be paid off, he said. If it is approved taxpayers, will see no increase in taxes. With state building aid at 81 percent, the district will also use a $311,908 EXCEL aid state grant, to help offset the local share.

Much of the work has to be done, Sheldon said, so if the proposal is defeated, many items will have to paid from the school's operating budget, which will not qualify for state aid.
