Superintendent's retirement, attendance policy changes discussed at board meeting

Retirements and a change in the attendance policy were on the agenda of the Oneonta City School District's regular Board of Education meeting.

It was held Wednesday at the middle school library.

The board accepted the retirements of Superintendent Michael Shea and two teachers at Valleyview Elementary School with some discussion.

Curriculum coordinator Karen Rowe was among those who thanked Shea for his years of service. His is retiring effective Jan. 1, 2013. Valleyview Principal Walter Baskin thanked elementary teachers Susan Dana and David Tuthill, both of whom are retiring effective July 1, 2012.

The board had the second reading and approved a policy that said "effective, Jan. 26, 2012, the Oneonta City School District will no longer accept nonresident residents."

There are exceptions, including nonresidents currently enrolled, upon payment of tuition. Siblings of such students born on or before Jan. 1 of this year will also be eligible.

Shea previously said such action was necessary in tight budget times as a way to have some control over possible expenses for such students.

In other areas, business manager Lisa Weeks talked about the impact of the 2 percent property tax cap recently approved by the state. There are a lot of factors that could make the cap either more or less than 2 percent.
