Hartwick students to be honored this weekend

Hartwick College will celebrate its 81st commencement at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Faculty, staff, family and friends will gather at the Oneonta campus under a tent on Elmore Field to recognize achievements of about 310 graduates, including the college’s first class of students to graduate from its three-year program.

“Commencement weekend is a memorable moment for our graduating seniors, their families and their friends,’’ Matt Sanford, commencement co-coordinator and registrar and director of the office of advising, said in a media release. “We are all proud of their many accomplishments.”

The weekend-long celebration includes a senior art exhibition reception and nurses pinning ceremony today. The seniors will meet at 5 p.m. today for a baccalaureate ceremony at the Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center, 24 Market St. in Oneonta.

The Hartwick College Alumni Association will honor the class of 2012 with desserts and dancing in Stack Lounge, Dewar Union, on campus starting at 8:30 p.m.

During commencement ceremonies Saturday, Kathy Ordoñez, an 1972 alumna and 2000 honorary degree recipient, will address graduates, their families and friends as commencement speaker. Ordonez is senior vice president for discovery and development at Quest Diagnostics and president of Celera.
