The State University College at Oneonta recently announced an upcoming workshop for teachers and education students on scientific and environmental teaching strategies.
Starting Monday and continuing through Thursday, the college's department of Earth sciences will host a workshop to introduce 15 participants to the GLOBE program, which presenters said emphasizes firsthand observations as a way for students to learn about the environment. GLOBE is facilitated by the U.S. State Department, NASA, NOAA and the National Science Foundation.
According to its website, Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment "is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program" established in 1994 to "promote and support students, teachers and scientists to collaborate on inquiry-based investigations of the environment and the Earth system."
Todd Ellis, assistant professor of meteorology at SUNY Oneonta and director of the Central NY GLOBE partnership, will lead the workshop with his colleagues Deanna TeBockhorst and Peter Falcon from the NASA CloudSat mission. Participants will learn how to take measurements of the atmosphere, water quality and the carbon cycle. The program will also include a model for incorporating student research into classes and an opportunity for participants to practice these techniques, presenters said.
Ellis has been an active GLOBE participant and trainer for six years. His partnership through SUNY Oneonta is in its first year. Presenters said Ellis plans to continue to offer these workshops, in addition to mini-courses on environmental observation, on a yearly basis.
