Sidney school to host meeting on state flood relief

Sidney Central School will be holding a meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 to help residents who qualify under the state Flood Relief Tax Act.

The district recently approved participation under the state plan, which allows the district to offer tax relief to residents and businesses that had property damage of at least 50 percent from recent flooding.

The informational meeting will be held in the high school auditorium. It will provide both an overview of the program and the proper forms needed.

Throughout the September flood and its recovery in the area, the school supported clean-up efforts and provided shelters, showers and other resources to help families get back on their feet, school Superintendent Bill Christensen said. In addition, it participated in a 21-day tax extension program to help businesses and residents with their school taxes.

"We are very pleased to continue our support of our community by opting into this state program," he said. "We recognize the impact on our tax collection, but realize that this is a time to support our local taxpayers and help in any way we can."

The program allows for taxpayers, both commercial and residential, to submit the proper forms to the local assessor's office before March 8. Following the filing of the paperwork, the assessor will make a determination if the property qualifies, and to what extent, for the reduction.
