Kay Jewelers to open store on Southside

Kay Jewelers will open a store in Southside Mall, the manager of the Oneonta mall said Wednesday.

Construction for renovations will start Monday in the 3,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by a Border's Express book store, mall general manager Luisa Montanti said. The store opening is projected for mid- or late-July, she said.

Border's Express closed after the corporation filed for bankruptcy.

Montanti said the jewelry business will be a nice addition to the mix of retail offerings at the mall, which inside will be fully occupied with the opening of Kay Jewelers.

"It's great for us," Montanti said.

Since 1916, Kay Jewelers has grown from one store to more than 900 nationwide, the company's website said. The closest Kay Jewelry stores to Oneonta are in New Hartford, Johnson City, Schenectady and Albany.

Kay Jewelers is a division of Sterling Jewelers Inc., based in Akron, Ohio. Together with Signet Jewelers Limited, the parent company, Kay Jewelers is the largest specialty retail jeweler in the United States and United Kingdom, the site said. The corporate website indicates jobs are available in Oneonta.

Kimberly Kanary, director of public relations for Sterling Jewelers Inc., said in an email she was "unable to provide details at this time" about a store opening or jobs.
