Bassett gets $13.7M in grant funds

Bassett Healthcare Network, headquartered in Cooperstown, was among the recipients of a total of $301.1 million in HEAL NY grants announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday.

Bassett received $13.7 million for two initiatives in the network under the state's Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law.

That includes $8.7 million for the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital bed reconfiguration project that will allow Fox to reduce, restructure and modernize its inpatient beds to achieve operating cost efficiencies and support quality improvements, according to the release.

The Cobleskill Primary Care Facility will receive $5 million to allow Bassett to construct a new site on the Cobleskill Regional Hospital campus to better meet the primary care needs of residents in rural Schoharie County, the release stated.

"This is wonderful news for Bassett Healthcare Network," spokeswoman Karen Huxtable-Hooker said in a statement.

Both projects specifically respond to health-care trends and needs, which include a demand for more primary care, she said.

In applauding the news in a media release, state Sen. James Seward, R-Milford, said "delivering health-care services to rural, low-income areas is extremely demanding."

He was a supporter of Bassett's grant request because, "the professionals at Bassett Healthcare know full well the obstacles and the planned redesign at Fox Hospital and expansion at Cobleskill Regional Hospital will help successfully meet these challenges."

The awards are allocated through the state Department of Health and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York and are part of nearly $3 billion in funding that has been invested in health care reform through 20 separate HEAL NY phases over the past seven years, according to a media release from Cuomo.
