Schumer seeks disaster aid to keep Amphenol in Sidney

To secure the final piece of funding necessary to keep Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., recently asked the federal Economic Development Agency for assistance.

In a letter to Acting Assistant Secretary for Economic Development Matthew Erskine released Friday, Schumer asked the agency to award $3.8 million in federal disaster aid to the Delaware County Industrial Development Agency.

Amphenol employs 950 people in Sidney, manufacturing electrical connectors used in aerospace and other applications.

Following the second flood in five years that damaged the Sidney facility and the region in 2011, the company has agreed to stay in the village if the IDA can develop a new location with the help of local, state and federal funds.

The requested funds would be 80 percent of the county's share.

"After storms wreak havoc on our communities, it is the federal government's job to step in and do everything possible to help localities recover," Schumer wrote.

The state has announced a $28 million package, including $26 million in tax credits, to make it possible. The IDA will acquire the site and develop the 23-acre parcel for Amphenol to develop. As part of the plan, the company will sign a 20-year lease with the agency to remain in Sidney, Schumer said.
