The Daily Star — A film screening, special menus in dining halls, several presentations and an atonement ceremony are among the activities scheduled for the State University College at Oneonta’s daylong recognition of the Black List.
The event, titled “Beyond the List: A Teach-in: Remembrance and Reconciliation,” will take place Sept. 4, the 20th anniversary of the Black List, on the college campus.
On Sept. 4, 1992, SUNY Oneonta shared information about all of its male African-American students with the New York State Police, who were seeking suspects as part of a criminal investigation.
The disclosure, which raised civil rights, racial profiling and privacy issues and sparked outrage, came to be known as the Black List.
“Beyond the List” will culminate in a keynote address by Dr. Cornel West at 7 p.m. in the college’s Hunt Union Ballroom.
All of the day’s activities will be free and open to the public. The college is issuing tickets, available upon request at no charge, at the Hunt Union Information Desk and at www.oneonta.edu/west, for West’s presentation.
