Common Council to consider hiring help for redistricting

ONEONTA _ The Common Council tonight will consider hiring a consultant under a revised agreement to help a city panel address redistricting.

The council is to meet in chambers in City Hall at 7 p.m.

Before the council is a revised agreement with the Center for Research Regional Engagement and Outreach at the State University College at New Paltz for $10,450.

The agreement was modified after council members and the mayor debated a proposal to hire a consultant to work with the Redistricting Commission during a council meeting earlier this month, according to draft minutes of the session.

Council members raised questions about the extent of the consultant's analysis of the city, the oversight of the redistricting project and costs involved.

City Attorney David Merzig said the Redistricting Commission would make recommendations to the Common Council.

The council may modify boundaries of the city's eight wards, Merzig said at the July 2 meeting, but if the council favored changing the number of wards, such a proposal must go before voters because it would fundamentally change the representation system in the city charter.
