Area man faces felony charges

An Esperance man faces four felony charges, state police at Cobleskill said in a media release.

Ethan A. Vanvalen, 21, was charged June 21 with first-degree possession of a forged instrument, second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of marijuana and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Cobleskill troopers said.

After receiving tips from the community, troopers executed a search warrant June 21 at the Vanvalen's home in Schoharie County. Troopers recovered more than 500 ecstasy tablets, a hallucinogenic substance, 14 ounces of marijuana, counterfeit currency, an explosive device and more than $2,000 in U.S. currency, a media release said. The explosive device was removed by the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit.

Vanvalen was arraigned in Cobleskill Town Court by the Honorable Richard Hamm and sent to Schoharie County jail, pending an appearance in Esperance Town Court.
