SUNY Oneonta receives state diversity grant

SUNY Oneonta is one of six colleges selected by the State University of New York's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to receive a grant to support diversity and inclusion initiatives on campus.

The $10,000 Explorations in Diversity and Academic Excellence grant will fund a series of activities during the fall and spring semesters to further diversity and inclusion on the State University College at Oneonta campus and in the Oneonta community.

Titled "Through Each of Our Voices: Narratives on Diversity, Inclusion and Community," the series will include multimedia and cultural immersion projects examining the obstacles facing underrepresented groups, film screenings, and workshops on bullying and "hidden" disabilities. It will culminate in an event celebrating diverse cultures and showcasing project participants' experiences through art, music, poetry and other media.

"This was an extremely competitive grant. Each of the members of the team that wrote SUNY Oneonta's proposal worked hard to make it stand out," SUNY Oneonta Provost Maria Thompson said in a media release. "Their collaboration has given the college another avenue to enhance our campus climate, which is a strategic goal."

Faculty members from the Human Ecology, Elementary Education & Reading, Secondary Education, Africana & Latino Studies, and Educational Psychology, Counseling & Special Education Departments developed "Through Our Voices" with professionals from the college-based Eastern Stream Center on Resources and Training program, the Center for Multicultural Experiences, the College Assistance Migrant Program, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, and the Center for Economic & Community Development. They will implement the project with assistance from the University of Kentucky, the Family Resource Network in Oneonta and the Oneonta City School District.

SUNY's Explorations in Diversity and Academic Excellence grants support campus-based, innovative approaches that illuminate and strengthen the intersections between diversity and academic excellence. The program will disburse $75,000 during the 2012-13 academic year.
