A brother and sister were arrested Wednesday after an investigation revealed that they had been involved with stealing the title of a vehicle from a Cooperstown resident and selling the pickup truck for scrap, Otsego deputies said.
Larry Elliott Bond III, 25, of Cooperstown, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, fourth-degree grand larceny and possession of a forged certificate of title, all felonies, deputies said.
Ashley Marie Oakley, 28, of Richfield Springs, was charged with second-degree forgery, also a felony.
Deputies said the investigation revealed the following: A Maple Street resident reported to Cooperstown police that the title to a 1997 Chevrolet truck was stolen last week, and police determined that the stolen title had been forged, and the pickup, which had been at a Richfield residence, was sold as scrap.
Early last week, the case was turned over to deputies. Working with the Utica Department of Motor Vehicles field investigation unit, it was determined that Oakley forged the title holder's name, and Bond signed it as buyer. He then signed another DMV form and sold the truck to an independent contractor, who took it to a Frankfort scrap metal business, where it was destroyed.
Bond was located in Hartwick and taken to the county sheriff's office for questioning and later was arrested. Oakley surrendered and was arrested. The defendants were arraigned in Richfield Town Court. Oakley was released on her own recognizance, and Bond was sent to Otsego County jail on $1,000 bail. They are to reappear in court Sept. 25.
She faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, deputies said, and he faces up to 11 years if convicted on the felonies.
