Neahwa Park to host suicide prevention event

The local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will again be sponsoring the Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Neahwa Park, an organizer said.

The event will take place Saturday with registration from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be speakers, a memorial service and other activities from 11 am. to noon. The walk will begin at noon and leave from the park's Market Street entrance, continue down Market Street onto Main Street and return through that park entrance. There will be an auction and refreshments afterward.

Everyone is welcome to participate, event organizer Donna Lange said. There is no registration fee; instead people are asked to donate or collect whatever they can.

The money support the work of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, that funds national and local prevention programs and research, according to a media release. The organization is at the forefront of research, education, and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. More than 36,000 children, teens and adults lose their lives that way each year.

Lange started the local walk last year after she lost her son to suicide. "I felt there wasn't a lot of awareness or help (for herself or her son)."

Lange said her goal is to bring awareness, prevention, education and resources to the local counties. Last year, 137 walkers raised more than $13,000. She said she hopes to increase participation and raise $15,000.

People can also register online at www.outofthedarkness.org or by calling (888) 333-2377.
