Vacuum demonstrators charged for allegedly ruining mattress

A vacuum cleaner demonstration at a Richfield Springs home ended with a damaged mattress and two traveling salesmen facing charges, according to state police.

Taylor J. Newton, 25, and Phillip J. Smith, 29, both of Syracuse, were showing a prospective customer a vacuum cleaner when, in the process of demonstrating its abilities, they damaged a $1,300 mattress, troopers said.

They were charged Monday with reckless endangerment of property, a misdemeanor and arraigned in Richfield Town Court. Newton and Smith were released to reappear in court July 29.

State police in Richfield Springs did not have any more information on the arrests Sunday night.

Syracuse.com reported the two men worked for Kirby Company and the property damaged was a Sealy latex foam mattress.
