The interim superintendent post at Oneonta City School District will go to retired Edmeston Central School Superintendent David Rowley, a school official said. He is scheduled to be appointed at the regular June 13 board of education meeting, board President Grace Larkin said.
A permanent replacement for Superintendent Michael Shea, who is retiring Sept. 1, is expected to be in place July 1, 2013, Larkin said.
"(Rowley) was the bet fit for the district," Larkin said. He will be paid a per diem rate of $500 for a maximum of 165 days. Shea was making about $155,000 a year when he announced his retirement earlier this year.
Rowley, who retired from Edmeston in July, said Thursday this was the only interim job he was interested in. Not only are he and his eight brothers and sisters OHS graduates -- he got his diploma in 1968 -- but he also has a nephew who still attends.
He said he was hopeful that with his experience in Edmeston and other districts. "I'll be able to help out my home district" with the challenges it faces, Rowley said. The biggest challenges he will be dealing with are the financial stresses that all districts are facing because of declining state funding, Rowley said. He said he will continue the long-range planning the district has started, but the biggest problem will be not knowing what state revenue will be.
He will be coming in as needed during the summer and working with Shea to help with the transition, Larkin said. He also will be working with others on curriculum before his regular schedule starts Sept. 1.
In addition, he will be helping the board get the superintendent search under way. The board is considering working with Rowley and ONC BOCES District Superintendent Nicholas Savin to help with the search. It would be cheaper than working with a consultant, Larkin said.
Shea said Rowley is "an excellent choice." He lives in the district and has already aided the district as a consultant, while staying informed on the issues it faces, Shea said.
