Otsego history group to host festival Saturday

The Otsego County Historical Association will present the inaugural "History Today and Tomorrow" festival Saturday at the Beardslee Homestead Hop Barn east of New Berlin on state Route 80.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and will feature music, food and a variety of activities highlighting the region's history. Admission is free.

Activities will include free tours of the National Historic Registry Beardslee Hop House. Al Bullard of Milford will speak at 1:30 p.m. on the development of the hops industry and how the Beardslee Hop House relates to the era "When Hops Were King."

According to a media release, a historic interpreter portraying a hops master from 150 years ago will provide "hop stories" and historical vignettes.

Several Otsego County historians will also be present to answer local and genealogical questions.

As part of the festivities, OCHA has teamed with Brewery Ommegang, who will provide a beer-tasting tent. A variety of Ommegang beers will be available so festival patrons can experience how hops affect the taste and flavor of beers.

In addition, OCHA will sponsor an educational demonstration of what beers taste like without hops or with high hops content. Those who participate will be asked provide proof of age.
