Oneonta to interview 2 manager candidates

The first two candidates for the city of Oneonta's city manager position will be interviewed today, according to a media release from the city clerk's office.

Cathryn Thomas, city administrator of New Castle, Del., and Bonnie Therrien, interim town manager of North Branford, Conn., will be interviewed by members of the Common Council and groups of city department heads, labor leadership and community leaders.

According to the release, one additional candidate is scheduled to visit soon, and several others remain under consideration.

The city manager's position was established as a component of the city charter approved by voters in November. The Common Council is expected to hire a manager in the fall.

According to resumes provided to The Daily Star by the city, Thomas is a graduate of the State University College at Cortland and a certified labor relations professional. Before joining to New Castle, Thomas was town supervisor of Webster, Monroe County, from 1994 to 2005, overseeing 150 full-time employees and a $19 million budget.

She has been city administrator in New Castle since 2006, where she helped establish a national park within the city, secured federal stimulus funds for stormwater projects and secured grants for other projects.

Therrien is a consultant with the Capitol Region Council of Governments, and previously served as town manager for the towns of Hebron, Wethersfield and Berlin, in Connecticut, as well as working in the management departments of the cities of Jacksonville, N.C., Hartford, Conn., and other municipalities.

She is a graduate of the American International College in Springfield, Mass., with master's degrees in public administration and criminal justice.
