46 properties sold at auction

The Otsego County government shed itself of 46 tax-delinquent properties Wednesday by way of its first public auction managed by private auctioneers.

County Treasurer Dan Crowell said the parcels collectively sold for $677,850.

He said he was generally pleased with the results, noting bidder turnout was higher than usual for the annual sale intended to help the county recoup as much money as possible to cover what it lost from the previous owners' non-payment of taxes.

The highest amount paid for any of the properties was $67,000 for a storefront with an apartment at 77 East St. in the city of Oneonta, he said.

The next-highest amount for the day was $62,000, offered for a ranch home at 5 Marian Lane in Otego.

The third-highest successful bid at the sale was $52,000 for a parcel described in the auction guide as 57.75 acres of rural vacant land off state Highway 166 in Middlefield, he said.

Crowell said that "the vast majority" of bidders were local residents.
