Foothills to host HD simulcasts of operas from the Met

Do you like opera?

If the answer is yes, chances are you'll like it even better in high definition. The Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center announced Tuesday that an HD simulcast of the 2012-13 season of The Metropolitan Opera of New York City will be shown at the Market Street facility on Saturday afternoons.

Twelve performances, including "Otello," "Aida" and "Rigoletto" will be shown from Oct. 13 to April 27.

Foothills was awarded a grant from The Tianaderrah Foundation of Unadilla to secure the equipment necessary to meet the Metropolitan Opera's specifications.

This acquisition also will enable Foothills to simulcast other performances and events.

Speaking for the foundation, Nellie and Bob Gipson said in a statement: "Broadening Foothills programming is a key to its long-term success. We are pleased to contribute to that."

Francesca Zambello, artistic and general director of the Glimmerglass Festival, and Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller, president of the Foothills board, said in a statement: "We are delighted to increase the availability of operatic performances in the Leatherstocking Region and hope that the series will stimulate education and enthusiasm for this important segment of international music."

Zambello added, "I am especially proud that one of the HD showings will be my production of 'The Trojans,' which I am directing at the Met this season."

Foothill Executive Director Huemac Garcia said, "This is a great opportunity for Foothills to deliver exceptional entertainment."

Season tickets and a performance schedule is available at www.foothillspac.com.
