WALTON _ A barn on Barkaboom Road in Andes was the basis for the watercolor painting that adorns the first annual Delaware Valley Hospital "Winter Wonders of the Catskills" collectible, limited-edition ceramic ornament.
Caroline Harrow of Livingston Manor painted the winter barn scene, which was awarded first prize in the areawide contest to find an image for the inaugural ornament. She received a $150 prize.
Harrow said she heard about the contest through the Delhi Arts Group, where she is a member.
"I am a retired person who dabbles in painting," Harrow said Thursday. "I have only been painting for four years since I retired."
Harrow said she has always wanted to paint, so when she finally had the time she began taking classes. She said she began with oil paints but couldn't tolerate the turpentine, then tried pastels but the dust caused an allergic reaction, so she settled on watercolor.
She said she has had paintings accepted twice for inclusion in the International Watercolor Show in Connecticut. The painting depicted on the ornament also won a prize in that show.
"I paint because I love to paint," Harrow said. "The winters are so long, and I enjoy sitting at the drawing board with my paints."
Delaware Valley contest spokeswoman Joy Bakker said about 30 entries were received, including paintings, photos, sketches and pen-and-ink drawings.
Bakker said Jill Steele of Downsville won the $100 second prize, and David Geer of Unadilla was awarded $50 for third prize.
Limited editions of 150 ornaments are being sold at $15 each with the funds slated to enhance the hospital, Bakker said.
The dated ceramic bisque ornament is disc shaped and is double-sided. The ornament says "Catskill Winter Wonders 2010."
"The contest is a terrific fundraiser," Harrow said. "In future years it will be wonderful to own the series. The ornaments really turned out nice, and I was impressed that the image was on both sides."
Harrow said the barn depicted on the ornament caught her eye when she and her husband traveled back and forth to Belleayre Mountain, where they were formerly ski instructors.
"It's an iconic barn that has often been photographed and painted," Harrow said. "It is still standing, but it is currently offered for sale for firewood, so it probably won't be there much longer."
Bakker said the ornaments are available at the Delaware Valley Hospital Gift Shop at 1 Titus Ave. in Walton. She said there are about 100 ornaments remaining, and they can be reserved for pickup by calling 865-2409.
Bakker said the hospital will be soliciting entries for the 2011 contest next summer. She said area artists might want to spend time this winter seeking out inspiration for entries. The deadline for next year's entries will be Sept. 30.
