Council OKs bonus for lot project

The Oneonta Common Council has given a green light for a firm to win a bonus if improvements to the Dietz Street parking lot are done sooner rather than later.

A $60,000 bonus could be earned if the project is done with 60 days instead of the 90 days in the original agreement, Mayor Dick Miller said Wednesday. For each day over 60, the firm will lose $3,000 of the potential established bonus amount, he said.

In August, the council approved a $593,041 bid from Dow Electric Inc. of Malone for the Dietz Street Parking Lot Redevelopment and Green Infrastructure Project. The project calls for drainage improvements, resurfacing, landscaping and new lighting.

The bonus was approved because the lot is a "critical parking resource" for a number of Dietz Street and Ford Avenue businesses, as well as those adjacent to the lot, Miller said.

"We wanted to limit the amount of inconvenience to the shortest time possible," he said.

Work started Saturday.

The council approved the bonus during a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday.
