A Deposit man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death Saturday of a 79-year-old pedestrian on state Route 8 in the town, state police said.
Barbara Seymour, 79, was walking near her home about 6:55 p.m. when she was struck by a southbound truck driven by James Gruscavage, 56, who was towing an empty snowmobile trailer, state police said.
Seymour was taken by ambulance to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, where she was pronounced dead.
State police charged Gruscavage with vehicular manslaughter in the second degree. He was arraigned in Deposit town court and was being held in the Delaware County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, they said.
“It appears he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident,” state police Capt. James Barnes said Monday.
Barnes said that Gruscavage was not given a breath test, but that a blood test was administered.
“We’re awaiting the results of that,” he said.
The Deposit Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to the accident scene. The investigation is continuing, state police said.
