Area woman accused of theft, coverup at motel
A former Otsego County resident was arrested Monday for stealing money from a motel she had worked at and removing business records to conceal the crime, Otsego deputies said.
Grace May Forgit, 38, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and first degree falsifying business records, both felonies, deputies said.
Deputies said in August 2012, the owner of the Amber Life Inn in Colliersville contacted deputies to report the crime. Following an audit of business records, it was determined that Forgit stole about $5,000 in cash from the business between April 1 and July 31 and took steps to cover her crime, deputies said. An investigation found that Forgit fled to Florida the month the crime was reported.
After speaking with investigators late last week, she returned to Otsego County and surrendered herself Monday at the Sheriff’s Office. She was arraigned by Cooperstown Village Court Judge Gary M. Kuch, who sent Forgit to jail on $5,000 bail returnable today in Milford Town Court.
She faces up to 11 years if convicted.
